The arrival of the world’s largest dedicated biomass plant in the UK in 2020 will add significant wood pellet growth to the European market. The 300MW MGT plant is scheduled to start in the first-half of 2020 and will be joined by the ramp up of pellet consumption in the Netherlands by German utilities RWE and Uniper.
On the supply side, the search for new supply continues with Asia and Europe competing for North American supply. The Baltic region and Russia is forecast to fill the supply gap with record exports expected from the region in 2020.
The European wood pellet market witnessed record spot prices in 2019 and early indications suggest the outlook for producers is positive for the year ahead with the onset of strong growth in pellet demand.
