“Towards sustainable heating” initiatve launched by Lithuania

President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda recently introduced a global initiative “Transition to Sustainable Heating” at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on 23rd September 2019. Supported by Sweden, Austria, Ukraine, Georgia and Latvia, the initiative aims to reduce the use of fossil fuels in centralized district heating and at delivering climate neutrality. Other countries where central heating is indispensable are reportedly on the way to join it.

Gitanas Nausėda presented Lithuania’s decision to substitute fossil fuels for biomass and eventually to switch completely to biomass in district heating. “In Lithuania, the share of biomass in residential district heating has increased from 30 to 70 percent over the last five years, while at the same time average heating prices have fallen by 30 to 40 percent,” the President said.

It is important to note that the heating sector has received special attention at a global level and sustainable biomass has been mentioned as playing an important role in achieving Paris goals. Lithuania is a great example of the fossil – biomass transition and its success story can drive important and urgent change in other parts of the world with suitable conditions.
